"What embodies the essence of New York City?"
If this question were posed to you, what image would instantly fill your mind? For many, it’s likely the iconic Manhattan skyline viewed from the Top of The Rock at Rockefeller Center. There, the Empire State Building graces the landscape, bathed in sunset's hues, illuminated under the night sky, or framed by a serene blue horizon. It's the quintessential "New York City view," a visual epitome that resonates profoundly.
In the autumn of 2016, I found myself in the heart of New York City for the first time, thus compelled to encapsulate its essence through my own lens. However, every quest has its challenges. The bustling crowds of tourists caught me unprepared, turning this first visit to the Top of The Rock into a disappointment. Without being able to be at the right time and securing the right spot, no caption of the iconic skyline was made.
Undeterred, I decided to return to The Rock a few days later to redeem such an experience with a better plan. For the second time, I spared an extra few hours to arrive earlier at the Top of The Rock to secure the best spot. Whilst hours under the sun amid constantly annoyed looks from other tourists, my patience came to fruition and I finally managed to capture the view.
Being used to the so-called million-dollar view of Hong Kong skylines, I never expected new captivation. Yet, I stood, witnessing the city's day-to-dusk transformation, a profound sense of nostalgia enveloped me, forging an unspoken connection.
