Description

I used different brands of colored pencils when rendering this piece. The paper I selected to use is Fabriano artistico hot pressed paper because the tooth of the paper makes the layering of colors adhere nicely to the paper.
The source of inspiration of this artwork came from a a photograph I saw and I asked the permission of the photographer if I can use his image for my artwork. The subject matter gave me the feeling of happiness and peace in the midst of nature and the birds' surroundings. I thought that by giving my own artistic interpretation to this piece the viewer would be captivated and mesmerized by the ambience surrounding the Flycatcher.
The technique I used in capturing this scene were scumbling, then layering, blending and burnishing with the colored pencils to achieve that realistic yet soft focus whimsical look of the subject.

Concept

I have always been interested in Birds and their synergy with nature. One of the most interesting birds is the Sunbird because they always are seen with flowers and other ornamental plants. My concept here was to portray the Sunbird amongst the plants they usually interact with so people will be drawn to their colorful feathers amidst the plants and wonder at the beauty of nature.
This artwork is rendered in colored pencils on Fabriano artistico hot pressed paper. The size is 20 cm width x 25.5 cm height.
