    Description

This is part of the author's series on the theme SELLING STORIES. The artwork depicts hawking in Ghana. Hawking is often defined as offering goods for sale to the public without a permanent built-up structure from which to sell. In cities across Ghana, hawkers are the most common sellers you can find. They line up the streets in heavy traffic, exposing themselves to real danger all in search of wages to feed themselves and their families.

You can virtually find anything on the streets of in Accra or Kumasi. Two of Ghana's biggest cities.
The picture on which this illustration is based on was taken on the seashore of Accra. Here, the hawker who is a tropical fruit seller is making her way to the market place to sell her treasured goods. Using this route is able to make good sells even before getting to the market.

  • About this artist

    Concept

Ghanaian markets often appear colourful, bustling, busy, noisy and chaotic. Amid the supposed chaos, it is easy to miss the individual stories of people who converge here daily, with the sole aim of making a living.
In the illustration above, we see 'the kayayei'.
A Kayayei/Kayayo/Kaya is basically a human porter. They are usually teen girls and young women from rural areas who migrate to the big cities with hopes of getting jobs and soon find that being a ‘kaya’ is the fastest way to support themselves.
When in the market, they will bear your newest purchases on their heads, follow you around till your shopping is complete and you are ready to be transported home. For the prime services they provide, their realities are a lot harsher than the smiles they wear while doing their jobs. Evidently, the child on the back of the woman in this picture is a gentle reminder of this.
