9s Gallery is pleased to present "Yukyu no ko," a solo exhibition by Haruko Kumagai from Thursday, 2/22/2024 to Thursday, 2/29/2024.

Haruko  Kumagai is an artist who has practiced creating works that confront the trauma of childhood memories and sexual assault victimization, and has been active in the art scene since 2019, with works shown in her first exhibition being acquired by a private museum and winning a special jury award at Independent Tokyo. She has attracted much attention from the art scene.

In this exhibition, she will present a series of works that use the motif of the inner child as a symbol of the "flow" that all life is interwoven with.

After working as a manga artist and illustrator, she entered university. While still in school, she recruited a group of friends to shoot 8mm special effects films. After working as an art director for a social game, she held her first painting exhibition with a friend in 2019.

In the same year, she started YouTube " Paruparu [Motorcycle Girls Channel]". The channel has over 50,000 subscribers (as of 2/1/2024). She also creates cartoons, illustrations, and copy for companies, and is active as a YouTuber.

His diverse style is appealing because it is unconventional in terms of expression and technique. He has established a style in which his own inner child expresses various emotions, as well as a style in which he puts his own emotions to the test based on his memories of being a victim of a sexual crime when she was in the fourth grade.

Since March 2021, a series of three paintings of size F100 has been included in the museum's collection.

Statement

"People keep changing every second. No one can stop it.

Even if life ceases, their existence remains in others. All people and things are connected and flowing."

Like the water in a river, painter Haruko Kumagai depicts "life" that is constantly changing form and flowing.

The "Akkun" series on view in this exhibition is a symbol of life in constant flux.
The "akkun" is an inner child, a part of Kumagai's childhood that still retains memories and traumas from her own childhood even after she has grown up.

While people are constantly changing, the influences of their childhood experiences and environment survive inside their veins. Kumagai created this new work based on his view of the inner child as a symbol of "transmigration," the interweaving of all life.

The inner child is also an existence that lies dormant in the hearts of all people. Viewers will encounter their "hidden self" through the "Akkun" series.
