INTERVIEW] Three New Works Depicting "Divine Beasts

works
At ONE ART TAIPEI,three new works based on the theme of "divine beasts" will be presented.

Here is Hiroki Takeda's firsthand account of the concept behind the new works and his enthusiasm for the overseas exhibition.

-Takeda, your "Shinju" series is based on the theme of fictional animals, isn't it?

The "Shinju" series is based on my research of East Asian mythology.
Until now, I have drawn dogs, cats, and other real animals, but "Shinju" is a fictional creature.

In order to reach a higher level as an artist, I am taking on the challenge ofcombining fictional creatures that have meaning in the form of myths with the colors I have been painting, and creating them through trial and error.

I decide on my own composition and theme colors for my work.
Therefore, I spent a lot of time re-drawing sketches and thinking about the placement of colors, and I feel that I was able to create a good work.

-The motifs you chose for this exhibition are dragons, shirasawa, and kyakuji. Dragons are familiar to us, but Hakusawa and Kienqi are unique in that they are horses with many eyes and tigers with wings.

hakutaku
Baizawa.

According to the legend,Baizawa is said to be knowledgeable about all things and to ward off evil, but he has a rather tricky appearance, with a total of nine eyes on his forehead and torso and, according to one theory, the face of an old man.

Although it looks a little frightening when written in words, I intended to depict a bewitching and beautiful figure with the horse as the main subject, making the most of the streamlined lines from the front of the head to the tail.

kyuki
"Kyu-qi" (窮奇)

The "Kakuqi " is one of the "Four Wicked Beasts" and is said to take the form of a giant tiger with wings and devour people.

This one has a dark atmosphere, so I was conscious of the deep shades of navy as the main color. However, it is not all about darkness, and I balanced it out by including bright colors such as yellow.

By the way, the large flower around the neck is based on a peony. I was told about this flower by a fan, and I thought it had a nice shape, so I decided to use it. I tried to create a three-dimensional effect by drawing lines along the shape of the petals.

-Regarding dragons, you also exhibited "Blue Dragon" at the "Beasts of God" exhibition (9s Gallery) in July 2023, but this time your work is mainly in bright red.

ryu
Dragon.

Yes, dragons are a motif that I have painted several times, including "Blue Dragon" and a work for the zodiac sign of 2024. In "Seiryuu," the dragon is surrounded by the image of the sea.In "Blue Dragon," the dragon is surrounded by coral and fish, not flowers, to evoke the image of the sea.

This time, I changed the subject and used red and yellow as the main colors to create a Chinese New Year-like festive atmosphere. Also, I tried not to use too many strokes on the body part of the dragon to give it a three-dimensional appearance that gives it a sense of undulation. Even though the motif is the same, I feel as if I am continually updating it.

I also try to create a sense of unity by using yellow in all of the works, while giving each piece its own image color throughout the entire body of work.

-This exhibition will be held in Taiwan.

I usually have many opportunities to exhibit in Japan, so Iwould like touse this exhibition as a chance to let people in Taipei know about my work.

In particular, the "Shinju" series is a new challenge for me, and I am looking forward to seeing what kind of reaction I will get from visitors to the exhibition, as each piece was created with great care and attention.
