Star Ferry, an enduring symbol of Hong Kong with a rich 125-year history, has faithfully served as a vital conduit for both daily commuters traversing between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula and adventurous souls seeking a scenic voyage.
It is remarkable that a mere 10-minute voyage across Victoria Harbour can hold such allure. What sets Star Ferry apart is its timeless design, a steadfast sentinel amidst the ever-evolving cityscape. As the panorama of Victoria Harbour transformed over the decades, the ferry’s essence remained unchanged since the 1950s.
Visitors around the world are drawn to this maritime treasure, experiencing a captivating journey that transports them back in time, away from the contemporary hustle and bustle, as they embark on this short ride.
It’s during the transition from the golden hour to dusk that Star Ferry truly dazzles. Bathed in the soft, ethereal glow of the setting sun, it conjures a profound sense of nostalgia, evoking memories of a bygone cinematic era, reminiscent of the enchanting 1950s and 60s.
For years, I have frequented Kowloon Public Pier, seizing every opportunity to capture the essence of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. From its towering skyscrapers to the vibrant life of its people, this waterfront has been my muse. Victoria Harbour and the iconic Star Ferry have consistently fuelled my creative spirit, serving as enduring symbols that pay homage to the city’s unyielding resilience.
One afternoon in January 2022, as I strolled along Kowloon Public Pier as usual, I was greeted by a breathtaking spectacle. Radiant sunbeams gracefully embraced Victoria Harbour, casting an enchanting glow upon the ferries as they glided elegantly across the water. Lost in the moment, I became one with the mesmerising scene, capturing its timeless beauty.
