‘Here comes the sun’ continues Chris' unique picturing of the flawed beauty of existence. The painting depicts that pregnant symbol of possibility, a sunrise. Painted in gold on thick 600gsm hand made paper the opulent physicality of the work embodies this sense of possibility. At the same time the graphic fluid sea communicates the fluid nature of life, reminding that all things change and are subject to transience. In this way the beauty and reality of existence are poetically described.

Concept

Chris paints existential and spiritually evocative artworks full of longing and flawed beauty. With the use of a consciously restrained palette of gold, blue and sometimes red, which gives his work a religious and spiritual overtone, Chris draws on pop art, abstract expressionism, op art and surrealism to create works that prompt reflection on what it means to be human in the world. Often populating his works with uncanny, weathered figures and forms that are repeated, falling, interlocked and wandering, his works express the struggle with transience and a desire for transcendence and redemption.
