When she creates her art, she often says "I don't know what I'm doing.". But when people ask her for a word, she tells them a story.

Marija Zudenigo is from a place where people have been leaving their hundreds of years old stone homes for generations. They leave in search of a better life, moving to bigger cities all over Europe. These old, abandoned houses mourn them behind their closed doors and dilapidated windows. The artist has witnessed the decay of these stone beauties over the years and became a collector of pieces of their history – pieces of furniture, tableware, appliances - scattered around them. Exposure to the elements and the passage of time had made them ugly in the eyes of others but not hers.

The artist’s other interest is flirting with kitsch. She works in wood, clay and draws, her themes set in the world of fairies, elves, ancient crowned kings, queens and their pages... surreal places that shine like gold, sparkle like silver… Like something out of a bedtime story....

By giving the broken, old, ugly and forgotten pieces a golden coating and clean, new forms, the opposites begin to meld into a new story... Such is her way of upcycling.
