With her gestural paintings, Jacqueline Dey captures the illusion of structured impasto surfaces by layering oil paints. She refers to the vocabulary of "abstract expressionism" and minimalism. The often contrasting color palettes within a picture convey the impression of space and depth. If the compositions seem chaotic or irregular at first, on careful examination they turn out to be orderly and methodical grid systems. With their unique spatula and raster technique, the soft, swirling organic shapes interrupt, counteract and complement the linear patterns.
