    Description

Scene of a Day of The Dead celebration on a cemetery in Mexico. It shows the families gathering around the ancestor's tombs decorated with altars of flowers, candles, food, and former belongings. I wanted to show the harmonious coexistence between life and death, light and darkness, and grief and celebration that takes place in this traditional ritual praising cyclical existence itself. I also wanted to exalt the colorful and intricate detail of Mexican Culture.

Because this is a tradition that goes way back before European Colony, I gave it a deeper meaning making the composition based on the geometrical structures and graphic symbolism of the ancient Mexican cultures as shown in Aztec and Mayan codex and temple murals.

  • About this artist

    Concept

Gus Arrieta is a multidisciplinary artist from Mexico City with an expressive and playful style that blends Spirituality and Magic with his passion for Folklore, Pop Culture, and Urban Art. This meeting between the old and the modern, just like not so long ago his natal country came to be, gives birth to his work. This is the reason why Mexican iconography has been almost always present in his artistic expressions.

He is specialized mostly in painting and drawing with different technics like acrylics, oils, mural painting, ink, and digital art. However, he also does tattoos, mosaic art, woodcarving, sculpture, music, and writing.

His deep interest in mythology, symbolism, and iconography of cultures and religions all over the world is incorporated in his art pieces, that is why the encounter with his work acts as a nexus between opposite poles, skipping the dialogue between artist and viewer as an intuitive experience in itself. As he states: Art for the Third Eye.
