Concept

What those odd little figures are all about. I found a new phrase recently, ‘Psychological Cubism’ and I think that sums up what I’m going on about rather nicely. So Cubism in its purist form views things from multiple angles, giving you a 360 (almost topographical) view on a single plane. I do the same thing with psychologically fractured subjects. So I take the extremes of human emotion, and create expressive, fragmented figurative works that shows minds and bodies gripped by an overwhelming inner fear. A kind of forewarning about the fragility of the flesh and the solitude of humans in the face of technical progress. The paintings come about almost by accident, a provocation, a journey into the dark energy of the subconscious. This lingering mania and disorder igniting in our minds our own stories of the absurdities of modern life. Letting us search for the demons buried deep inside, while dragging the carcass of our prejudice and hatred behind us. Echoing the raw disturbance that bubbles under the surface of society. So I look at the anxiety, depression and uncertainty that stems from the constant pressure to present our ‘best life’. In a world preoccupied with technology, where we are connected to thousands, yet loneliness is commonplace amongst the likes, the follows, the hashtags. I seek new visual paths to unsettle the viewer, pushing what they are comfortable with. While the paintings maintain a hint of accuracy, they flit between controlled precision and unabashed exuberance, and there’s always an awkwardness to entering the paintings that provides an emotional rawness, a more elemental form of self expression that feeds off the nervous system in pure undiluted imagination. And then I wrap them in colour.

Biography

The English artist Oliver Perry proposes a language composed of outbursts of extreme creativity which permit him to produce works of intense figurative richness in which lyrical-narrative components come to completion in the explanatory attention which the artist applies to the titles of the pieces.

Even though his inspiration is derived from an objective and phenomenal reality, he does not privilege this exclusively, rendering visual elements with the expression and perception of something mysterious and magical that appeals even to the most sensitive soul.

Atmospheres of emotional importance, as in a vision suspended in a state of uncertainty far from any point of reference in time and space, are the pretext for a personal investigation into the human condition which avails itself of a formal disembodying of cubist heritage in which the object does not however solidify itself in exasperated geometric structures but prefers a more complete abundance thanks to a vocabulary based on fluctuating rhythms and anthropomorphic silhouettes with surrealistic characteristics.

Figures are defined by a delicate and distinct outline which designs the forms in the light of liquid and limpid colours. Chromatic brilliance - where even the shadows are formed by other shades - extend over large areas, give life to continual tension between form, line and colour, achieving expressive visions of a singular metamorphic effect.
