I have always enjoyed studying and painting in a wide variety of styles. My real passion is working with oils. I am also proficient with watercolors.
Since I have been painting on Maui I have mostly continued a style of landscape-seascapes in oil that possess a feeling of what a joy it is to live on such a wonderful island. I have heard this style described as VanGogh meets Kadinsky.

Picasso, Cezanne, Brach, Gris and Kadinsky all had a strong influence in the way I approach abstracts.

When creating a painting I feel like it can be compared to breathing. You breath in then you let it out. In painting you observe and take in your environment and surroundings and then you attempt to creatively "breath out" how these influences look, feel or affect you and your consciousness.

For me the real joy of painting is that it can be approached with no expectations and certainly with no limits.

A blank canvas is another opportunity and challenge to explore these endless possibilities.

I began painting at a very young age. I was given a set of oil paints when I was 8. Going to school in Texas there was not a lot of interest given to art so I mostly studied from books and taught myself.

As a Young teen my family moved to Indiana and for the first time I was part of an education system that had a sincere commitment to art and art studies.

By the time I was through with high school I was producing and selling some pretty good work.

In my early twenties I met Maggie McGill and she changed my life. (Maggie was in her 80's and was probably the first Master of Oils I had met)

After having the rare honor of painting in her studio and learning so much about painting, painting philosophy and what to expect and not expect from an Art Career, I have never forgotten how much she gave to me. She helped me transform myself from a serious student to a confident artist.

In 1975 while painting and showing full time in Austin, Texas I began doing a lot of sailing. The sailing became a new career for awhile and as a captain I was paid well enough but I went for about 7 years without painting at all. They were great years. Many of them spent in various ports of the Caribbean, Mexico, Belize, etc.

But I never stopped thinking of getting back to painting.

One day I met and fell in love with the most beautiful and smartest lady ever. She helped me look for a place to paint, and after moving to Hawaii, has been helping me with my career and life ever since.

When we moved to Hilo on the Big Island I had already fallen in love with Hawaii, and I was looking for a place to settle for awhile and paint. Eleven years later I was still there and still painting.

At that time I was contacted by a gallery in Lahaina and so started showing on Maui.
There I was contacted by Starbucks and made arrangements to do 3 large murals.
1 in Wailea, Maui, 1 on Kauai, Hawaii and 1 at the International Airport on Oahu, Hawaii.

I have been on Maui every since, still painting, still showing.
