Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso or "Refosco with the red stems" is a red grape variety that got its peculiar name thanks to the red color of the stems. The dark-skinned grape varieties, native from Friuli Venezia Giulia, western Slovenia and the Istrian Peninsula of Croatia, belongs to the large ancient family of the Refoscos. The wine are full-bodied, have slightly herbaceous nose, impressive fruit intensity, laced with minerality and high levels of tart acidity. The special name of wines from Refosco — Terrano in Italy, Teran in Slovenian Karst region and Croatian Istria.
The wines have powerful and tannic taste, with a deep violet color and a slight bitterness. On the palate, there are strong currant, blackberry and plum flavors. For the best quality this wine must be aged for four-to-ten years, thanks aging it achieves a perfect floral quality.
