    Description

I wanted to study at a hyper-realistic level two elements of the human face that I normally tended to draw less carefully: nose and mouth. I wanted to explore their textures, so I chose a model with fair and freckled skin.

I asked myself how to make the result communicative without entrusting the expression to the eyes as I generally use to do. I decided I would make it through the lack of them. As I drew all those black and white marks on the skin, I imagined that I was creating a man made of sand. I remembered the legend of the Sandma, who throws sand into children's eyes. I imagined my Sandman without eyes, maybe covered in sand, or even sandy. I thought: "perhaps, as a child he fell victim to the same fate, and that's what made him become the Sandman"?

I only used graphite pencils, kneaded eraser and an eraser pen. The drawing itself is 17x22cm and it's made on a 24x33cm Fabriano F4 sheet of smooth paper.
The artwork is sold with certificate of authenthicity and a 30x40cm passepartout, so it's ready to be framed but the
    frame is not included.

  • About this artist

    Concept

Deeply fascinated by the Symbolist movement of painting, Enrico is currently focusing on creating images from personal visions and inner imagery. In order to do this, he draws inspiration from natural places and often starts his new paintings en plein air, surrounded by unspoiled nature, and finishes them in the studio . His subject matter mainly revolves around the themes of the unfathomable and the indecipherable in the individual and in nature, and in the relationship between the two.

Enrico is an enthusiastic supporter of the recent revival of traditional painting techniques. Embracing this, he constantly studies, reproduces and draws inspiration from the great oil Masters in art history: from Raphael, Leonardo and Titian, to Rembrandt, Corot and Waterhouse. A lover of gentle lines and harmony in shapes and colours, he considers himself to be an aesthete, and is always looking to create shapes and compositions that please the eye and invite the mind to explore and wander.
