I am interested in the boundary between human society and nature, and I create sculptures using trees. My motifs are a mixture of my strong yearning for culture, which I feel because I was born and raised in a remote, mountainous area, and my admiration for the abundance and power of nature. All of the sculptures are made from Japanese trees, mostly trees that have been killed or felled by typhoons. Working with a combination of motorized tools such as chainsaws and router machines, and traditional woodworking tools such as chisels and cannas, the artist attempts to carve new, smooth forms that are full of life. The works are given relatively long titles, all of which are words taken from literary works or passages from philosophical books in which the artist has already died. The overlap of the years in the grain of the carved creatures and the words of the authors of the books from which the titles are taken, causes a shift to a new perspective that is not "here and now" and reinterprets the problems we face and the stories we tell.
