Is abstraction a more vivid reality? Is it a painting or an ooze? Nakabayashi paints on smooth supports with automatism and quick brush strokes, creating a kind of blotchiness that looks like a forest or a river. A street tree unnaturally cut to keep it out of the street is for her whose voice no one listened to, water flowing through a garden is for him who is protected from people and never leaves the darkness, and a painting that at first glance appears to be a landscape is expressed as a raw people's reality. What is depicted in the paintings changes constantly according to the viewer's background and the issues of the world, and can be a device to make the viewer experience the body of the painting and imagine the pain of others. I have lived as a woman in Japan since I was a child, and I have felt physical pain that is hard to heal. Is this work to heal that wound, or is it to reach out to those who are in need of help? It cannot be just one or the other. Such an act of materializing one's world is an art of understanding someone and a connection to society.
