Concept

Todd Lehman’s abstract paintings are about spaces and shapes, and about energies and visual noise—but like music and modern dance they can also be about silence and solitude. Mr. Lehman’s paintings are a mirror—a reflection of where he has lived, where he has traveled, the books he has read, the music he listened to, as well as many personal musings. They are pages of a visual autobiography.

Biography

Todd Lehman grew up in Millersburg, Pennsylvania, before settling in New York City. He completed an undergraduate degree in journalism at Oklahoma State University and attended graduate school at Pennsylvania State University. He studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League in New York City under Edward Lanning, eventually becoming Mr.Lanning’s teaching assistant. He also attended Pratt Institute and the Pratt Graphics Center.

Lehman’s work has been exhibited in many galleries in New York City, as well as those in Munich, Washington, DC, Toronto, and Italy. His painting style progressed from representational and figurative work, through Turneresque landscapes and abstract expressionism before arriving at his own definitive architectural style. His work is highly influenced by music—particularly classical and jazz—poetry, and modern dance. Travel, and particularly his extended stays in Sicily, also informed his work.
