Two Visions Tomoaki Yoshikawa rearranges the masking tapes used in his production. The masking tape is a part of the painting. However, it can also be seen as an invasion of the surface of the painting as a temporary object that can be removed. The masking tape, with its paint strokes, creates an expressive representation. It bends in folds. At times, the two tapes joined together create new brush strokes. It is an irregular revolt against the flat surface of the painting, an impulsive improvisation. The simple production method of separating and moving the painted surface is a representation of the contemporary production system. The painting becomes a composition of products and their remnants. The "product" is represented as a "cold abstraction" symbolizing the rational and standardized society. The "residue" is expressed as "hot abstraction" with emotional brush strokes. In Yoshikawa's paintings, two contrasting visions are created from a single production system. This is what makes his work noteworthy. In his work, the artist expresses the correlation between the two visions and the importance of the impulsive improvisation of the "residue.

Tomoaki Yoshikawa was born in Kobe, Japan in 1962. The Hanshin area (between Osaka and Kobe), including Nishinomiya, where he lives, is the base of activities of "Gutai," one of the most important art groups in Japanese history. Yoshikawa inherited their emphasis on originality, even though he is from a different generation. While practicing architecture as an architect, Yoshikawa has been exploring his own unique art form. In 2015, his art took a new turn after a period of study in Europe in 2012 and 2013, and in New York in 2014. Modernist figurative elements with which he is familiar in the realm of architecture became the basis for his paintings. The masking tape and the brushstrokes generated from it are a statement of his intentions for contemporary space expressed on the surface of his paintings.
