Shimpei Kawaai was born in 1987.

Based on the theme of "Mutable and immutable coexistence based on The middle way * ", he pursues the state of modern ink painting based on classical ink painting techniques, and Zen philosophy .

Expressing "regularity and coincidence" and "predictability and deviation" by using the characteristics of Japanese paper that specializes in acceptance and the characteristics of ink painting that uses unconscious blurring and rubbing.

*【 The middle way 】

...This is one of zen philosophies. [Middle] in this case does not mean between two things. Rather separate from the two things. [ The middle way ] means to go beyond contradictions and opposition apart.

YU-GYO ~ Around the world

...Buddhist Zen monks practice a form of asceticism known as yugyo.
It is a traveling practice in which monks do not stay in a certain temple but itinerate through various countries in order to seek Buddhist teachers and friends and for the purpose of teaching.
The project "YU-GYO ~ Around the world ~" is about wandering the world backpacker style, just like the Zen monks of the time, and learning from the people they meet.
At the same time, it is also an awareness-raising campaign to promote Suiboku-ga by holding Suiboku-ga workshops and street Suiboku-ga performances in the countries and regions where they stayed.
In other words, this is a reinterpretation and practice of yugyo by ink and wash painters living in the present day.
