Mantidoko aims to "reconstruct the beauty painting. This work was selected for the 100 10 2023/2024.
It attracted a lot of attention from the beginning of the exhibition, and more than 100 people applied for the lottery sale.

9s Gallery will present "UPDRAFT" Rising Artists from 10010 2023/24, agroup exhibition of five up-and-coming artists who attracted attention at 10010, including Kai Inoue, from May 18 (Sat) to June 1 (Sun), 2024. This article will focus on the exhibition of the Mantis Mantis.

In this article, we present an interview with Mantisko, focusing on his new series "SAITA".

Mamiko Mantis is a contemporary artist who challenges to "reconstruct the beauty painting. She depicts human vitality through women.

She began her career as an artist in 2021. In August 2023, she will participate in a group exhibition at GINZA SIX Artglorieux Gallery, a gallery owned by Daimaru-Matsuzakaya, together with Yayoi Kusama and others, and is highly anticipated in the contemporary art world.

In addition, seven of his works were exhibited in his solo exhibition "Do girls dream of Electric City?" at TRiCERA in the same month, two in the "Christmas Miracle" exhibition held in December, and nine in the "27" exhibition to be held in January 2024.

What we gained from the 100 Artists 10, an art competition without barriers

-This group exhibition is an exhibition of selected artists from the 100 Artists 10 2023/2024 art competition run by TRiCERA. This is the first time for you to participate in this exhibition.

Personally, 100 People 10 2023/2024 was an unprecedented experience for me as an artist.

First of all, it was stimulating to receive feedback from more people, as we were featured in media coverage on the first day of the exhibition.

Also, since this year's exhibition format allowed applicants to participate in the selection process, I was impressed by the fact that I was exposed to nearly 800 works of various genres and themes. The artists themselves were of different nationalities, ages, and genders, and I felt that there wereno barriers ina good sense.

When I saw my own work among the many selected works at the actual venue, I felt I was able to take a step back and look at it from a more objective perspective than usual.

At the opening party, I talked with artists and collectors, and I was impressed that collectors paid more attention to the works themselves, while artists talked more about the techniques and overall concepts of the works.

In the course of our discussion, I was also reminded of the importance of verbalizing the artwork.
Of course the work itself needs to be strong as a painting, but I realized that if the concept and title of the work are developed, it can create more of a hook for the viewer.
Of course, it is also important not to explain too much, so it is difficult to find the right balance.

The Evolving "KAIKA" Series

-This group exhibition will feature three new original paintings. Of these, the "KAIKA" series is the one you began working on around March with the theme of "unbounded feminine beauty.

It may be difficult to see from the outside, but I have gradually strengthened the contingency in the work. Specifically, the paint dripping from the petals.

In the beginning, I marked the position on the canvas where I wanted to hang the paint, but recently I have started to decide where to hang the paint instantly at the time of creation.

By doing so, I am able to express the organic and uncontrollable beauty of "flowers. I feel that I am getting closer to the theme of "the beauty of simply existing," which is the goal of the "Kaika" series.

Human vitality depicted in the "SAITA" series

-I understand that you are also presenting the second work in the new "SAITA" series.

The "SAITA" series is a mix of concepts from my previous "City" series and "Kaika" series.

In the "City" series, I focused on a woman who is part of a huge city, but still manages to stay strong.
Kaika" depicts a woman who, like a flower, is beautiful without artifice.
In " SAITA,"I challenged myself todepict a woman who has a strong ego without being swallowed up by the city, and who also possesses beauty as it is, as depicted in "KAIKA.

I wanted to emphasize the fact that the woman is not buried in the city, so I made her larger than the background and posed her to resemble a flower growing through the asphalt.
I also wanted to emphasize the organic lines of the woman by creating a pose with movement, which would stand out in contrast to the inorganic nature of the city.

-The second work you are showing here has Marunouchi as its background.

I chose Marunouchi because I have visited the area on business before.

Since I started painting the "City" series, I have come to imagine that people are swallowed up by the values of the city, and that the very existence of the city itself begins to play the role of a character.

Especially in Marunouchi, one of Japan's leading office districts, many people take pride in the fact that they work in Marunouchi, but at the same time, it is a city that wears out as people continue to work there.
It is a place where the wear and tear of equipment parts is strongly expressed.
I chose Marunouchi because I wanted toexpress the strength of human life force that is not swallowed up by the city by daring to use such a place as a motif.

-I can see that you have deepened your concept through the production of your works so far.

I believe that having the opportunity to continue painting my own works and to have them exhibited alongside the works of many others, as in the 100 10 2023/2024 exhibition, is a good stimulus for me to deepen my contemplation.
I would be happy if this group exhibition would also bring me the opportunity to meet new people.
