On October 27-28, 2023, "Modern and Contemporary Art @ HILLSIDE FORUM" dealing with modern and contemporary art was held at SBI Art Auction.

The total amount of successful bids increased from the previous auction, indicating that the art market is back on track.
This article introduces the results of noteworthy successful bids at this year's SBI Art Auction.

Recovered from the previous auction & exceeded the expected bid amount for the first time in 9 months

The total amount sold at the SBI Art Auction held on October 27 and 28, 2023 was ³,066,665,250, a 91% success rate.
This was significantly higher than the total amount (¥631,867,500 excluding tax) and the bid ratio (88.60%) of the previous auction in July, and the actual amount exceeded the forecasted maximum bid amount for the first time in January 2023.
Although the first half of 2023 tended to see a suppression of art auction transactions worldwide, this auction showed signs of a recovery.

In the first half of 2023, many of Ayako Rokkaku's original paintings sold for less than the average of the expected bidding price, and in some cases, the bidding price per piece was less than ¥1,000, but it gradually recovered to the ¥2,000 range from September to October. However, the price has been gradually recovering to the ¥2,000 range from September to October.

Prints by Backside Works. also sold well at this auction.
In particular, "Maneater" sold for ¥1,782,500, almost double the highest bidder's estimate. The highest bid of "Valiant Girls" also exceeded the estimate at ¥3,105,000.

Sold bids for Backside Works prints have been on a downward trend from March to September 2023, but this time they were up significantly to a level slightly above that of January 2023.

This is quite a recovery from the September 2023 domestic auction, where an original work in the same series sold for ¥690,000.

The highest bidder at this auction was Yayoi Kusama's original painting "Pumpkin". The original bid was ¥50,000,000-¥80,000,000,000 due to its popular motif and original artwork, but it sold for ¥80,500, 000, slightly exceeding the highest bid.



Akira KANAYAMA

This work by Akira Kanayama, a representative artist of the Gutai Art Association, sold for ¥48,300,000, more than five times the highest estimate of ¥8,000,000.
This work was created by Kanayama in 1958, five years after the formation of the Gutai Art Association. It reflects Kanayama's style of emphasizing the space and environment in which the work is exhibited, and its importance in the history of contemporary Japanese art can be inferred as the reason for this high bid.

A silkscreen by Basquiat, who pioneered graffiti art and collaborated with Warhol, also sold for ¥15,525,000.



David Hockney

This is one of the "Moving Focus" series, which Hockney created in the 1980s as an attempt to coexist multiple viewpoints on a single canvas.
The same work was also exhibited at the "David Hockney" exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo until November 5.

Although it was within the expected bidding price, it was sold for ¥12,075,000, the highest bid for a print work as a whole this time.

Kengo Kito

2,415,000 yen (Estimate: ¥300,000-¥500,000)

This work, with lamé scattered across the entire surface, sold for ¥2,415,000, approximately five times the expected maximum bid.
Kengo Kito creates a wide range of installations and sculptures incorporating everyday industrial products, lame, and motor movement.
The Cosmic dust series also sold for 1,437,500 yen at the April 2023 auction, so the price rose another 1,000,000 yen over the six-month period.

Auction prices of Kito's works by year show a sharp increase in the amount of successful bids per piece in 2023.
The future of the secondary market is attracting attention.

Masami Yamazaki

A work by Masami Yamazaki, who was exhibiting for the first time at auction, sold for ¥2,415,000, about four times the highest bidder's estimate.
An up-and-coming artist who has exhibited at art fairs such as Art Collaboration Kyoto, Yamazaki is expected to grow in the secondary market in the future.



Ryo Shinagawa

Ryo Shinagawa is an artist who rethinks "Japanese painting" by incorporating traditional Japanese painting and modern art techniques.
This is the sixth time he has sold an original work at auction, and the fourth time he has sold an original work, with the highest bid of ¥1,610,000, more than four times the expected maximum bid.
Shinagawa's original artwork has exceeded the estimate in every auction so far, and is expected to become more popular in the secondary market in the future.

Yukari Nishi

Yukari Nishi is an acrylic artist who creates digital collage images from photographs and online images.
This was the first time for her to exhibit at auction, and the fact that Lot No. 3 appeared soon after the auction, suggests the high level of attention and expectations from the auction house.
The result was a strong 1,265,000 yen, about 3.5 times the expected bid.

KYNE, the darling of the two-dimensional artists, exhibited five original paintings and prints.

It is thought that the fact that the work was sold in 2014, in the early stages of KYNE's activities, may have contributed to the increase in price.



Kosho Ida

Kosho Ida is an artist who has attracted international attention in recent years for both his primary and secondary works.
At the SBI Art Auction held in September 2023, a bag made in collaboration with Dior sold for 1,897,500 yen and attracted a great deal of attention.
The current work, an original artwork, is a solid result at ¥16,100,000.
