Tomoichi Fujita creates sculptures using his own technique developed from Koushi-kumi (格子組) which is one kind of kumiko (組子) technique. Kumiko is a traditional architectural technique where thin pieces of wood, about 3 mm thick, are connected without the use of nails. The artist is known for combining koushi-kumi and contemporary craft skills to create a new type of artwork linked to Japanese history. Fujita studies this history and attempts to illustrate it through his art using traditional architectural and contemporary craft techniques. It could be said that his artwork represents and highlights the relationship between the development and desuetude of technology with the course of history. When Fujita’s series of art is completed, it might help us understand Japanese history through art.
