"A beggar with a JBL Boombox column in Imperial Russia"

This work is from the series "Provinces of the Absurd" in which I combine two different eras. I draw people of Imperial Russia of the 19th and 20th centuries with objects of our time. Before, beggars walked with a musical instrument - a lute, playing sad melodies. I replaced it with a column of our time. A joke with a lot of absurdity.

About creativity:

I love history, but in a peculiar way. I like to listen to lectures, especially about archaeological finds. I am attracted by the impulse to feel the people of the past. This can be done rather on a psycho-emotional level. Considering their clothes, household utensils and especially objects of worship. With the help of redrawing, it is possible to concentrate on the subject. In this process, the thought itself flies and an emotional response is obtained. It is difficult to describe it, but the feeling of something archaic and ancient remains in the soul.
In the process of drawing, I feel a rapprochement with the past, with ancient artists.
I hunt these feelings. Archaism, for me, is something ancient and forgotten that can only be felt. And it's very hard to understand.
I'm drawing an archaic line. It's like meditation. With immersion in yourself and your emotions.
I started with images of Paleolithic Venus. The archaic figures of the fertile body aroused in me a strong interest in studying. In a graphic manner, I depicted about ten figures. Subsequently, these images found a great response from people who appreciate art and are fond of history. I was able to capture emotions by means of the line.
The search for contact with the creativity of people of the past led me to the next stage.
I was looking at photos of the late 19th and early 20th century Imperial Russia. I was fascinated by the harsh and tired faces of the peasants. Wary and distrustful, they looked into the lenses of the photographers' cameras. I decided to portray one of these women, but feeling the incompleteness of the work, the idea came to my mind to add absurdity to the work.
From this thought, a series of works "Provinces of the Absurd" was born, of which there are about 30 works in graphics and 10 paintings. Which also found a response in the souls of people. Someone reacted negatively to them, others admired this idea, but usually people were happy and laughed.
After that, the search led me to the icons. I was interested in the icons of ancient Russia of the 14th and 16th centuries. Studying with the eyes of which there is a deeper understanding of the understanding of faith by people of the past, relative to modern ones. A feeling of greater fullness and awareness, fullness and spirituality.I felt a sense of spirituality while studying these objects of worship and art.
Initially, I tried to copy the icon, including my creative wishes in the process.
After that, I decided to abandon the details and left only silhouettes and basic symbols.
To my surprise, the works turned out to be alive and filled. Light and warmth appeared in them, deprived of other intrusive details, attracting with their essence and blurred symbols.
Each new experiment gave me new emotions and a different perception of time and the subject being studied. This is a perception that does not exist in the usual life of a modern person. It's like the breath of the past from Grandma's old trunk. Dusty, with hints of the smell of rotten wood and earth. Something native, but unknown. Feelings of approaching truth and its slipping away. That's what I'm looking for and trying to transfer to my canvases and paper to show people of the present.
In the paintings I try to convey the spirit of the times of the past centuries, playing with the addition of objects that were not characteristic of that time. Or complementing the image with text content.
