Advocate of Arte Povera Passes Away

2020/05/02

There has been a lot of gloomy news about the closure of museums and the cancellation or postponement of exhibitions. This is the news of the death of Germano Celant (1940-2020), a legendary critic and curator. Celant was born in Italy in 1940. After studying art history at the University of Genoa, he started his career as an editor, and later held "Im Spazio" in 1967, which advocated "Arte Povera" and became a key figure in the art world. The "Arte Povera" movement, which means "poor art" in Italian, presented works using everyday and crude materials such as newspapers and ropes, and Celano's achievement is partly due to the fact that he made the world aware of Italian minimalism and the trends of young artists of that era. He is one of the world's most famous curators, having curated works for the Guggenheim Museum and the Venice Biennale, and under normal circumstances, he would have been honored with an exhibition. I pray for his soul rest in peace.
