This painting, "Goats, Nepal", shows the small goat pen attached to the house that I lived in. The goats were kept for fresh milk. The remote valley had no shops for fresh food, firstly because of the constraints for access by lorries on the narrow dirt tracks and secondly for the lack of demand. Instead, each family would keep goats, a buffalo and chickens from which they would get fresh milk and eggs. The contrast between this self-sufficient, natural approach to support their being and the detached, consumerist culture around food in the west struck me. Using natural colours, this painting depicts a scene far removed from daily life in London.
