    Description

Risk is a strategic board game where the object is to take over the world. At the time of his inauguration, President Trump threatened the U.S’ withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord. Here, all 26 pages, 15779 words of the English edition of The Paris Climate Accord are engraved in an inward spiral. The verb “risk” amplifies the magnitude of the document and the accelerating effects of climate change across the world. On the left side of the board is a list of the nations who have not signed the Accord. Below that is an outline of the measures that need to be taken to exit the Paris Climate Accord. At the time of this work’s creation, Trump has put into motion all necessary steps to withdraw the U.S. from The Paris Climate Accord, meaning the U.S. can officially exit on November 4, 2020.

    Artist Statement

Association arises from material, particularly material with preexisting contexts. When working in found objects the manipulation of context becomes the true medium. Found-object art is contradictory, the discarded becoming precious, and it is through this contradiction, the implied “but”, that rhetoric is formed.

My work examines the way these inherited contexts are utilized socially and politically to construct the world we inhabit. My interest in both language and sociopolitical topics stem from a lifetime of working in community mental health, where decades of up close and personal experience led to pointed critique of the systems created to moderate, regulate, and maintain society.

I visit flea markets and estate sales almost daily, searching for objects that draw me in: old shoes, dusty rolling pins, rusty shovels, and other cast-offs. Through alteration, manipulation, and multiplication, these neglected items are transformed into sculptures and installations that interrogate and deconstruct unseen social truths.
