Story:
I was invited to a wedding in Mérida, and a friend suggested I reserve a day to visit Celestún. This estuary is home to thousands of flamingos and features channels where mangroves thrive.
In addition to motorboat tours, you can explore the mangroves by kayak or canoe. The area is marked on the map as Guardianes de los Manglares, the local tour cooperative.
The kayak and canoe tours cover 800 meters of mangroves, ending at the Ría. These tours are guided by locals who are familiar with the path and its ecosystem. The guide explains the different types of vegetation and wildlife while propelling the canoe in the same manner as gondoliers in Venice.
As you exit the Ría, you’ll encounter a forest recovery area. Over 20 years ago, a hurricane devastated a large section of the mangroves. You can still see the remnants of the mangrove trees in a saline lagoon. These two images were taken during the tour.
