Story:
As we near the end of 2024, I’d like to share a few images captured with a special black-and-white film.
At the time, we were living in Mendoza, Argentina, when I discovered a small boutique lab in Buenos Aires run by Gabrielle Novella. This lab had the processing equipment and chemicals to develop a unique black-and-white reversal film from Agfa called Scala. Much like color slides, it produced images with rich blacks and superb definition. I used this film sparingly, as the labs I was familiar with were located in Germany and the United States, which often complicated the return of processed film due to customs issues.
One of my most memorable shots was taken in the Cañon del Atuel, where a large dam had been built. On the road leading to the dam, I noticed a mountain that caught my attention. I used a polarizing filter and a red filter to capture the scene. This was just before the turn of the century, when all computers that hadn't been updated to handle four-digit years were expected to crash.
