    Description

I had invented a game of catching the sun with my friend's daughter when she was two years old. We would both stand in the window at sunset and try to catch the setting sun with our fingers. That precious memory inspired me to create this artwork where children are carried into the night sky by cockatoos and they are trying to catch stars after the whole world has gone to sleep.

    Concept

"I think that the ideal space must contain elements of magic, serenity, sorcery and mystery." - Architect Luis Barragan

It is the creation of this mystical space in a sheet of paper that fuels all my work. Cutting the paper carefully allows me to decelerate, meditate and find myself. But it is the prior task of drawing that challenges the mind to break through the rigidity of everyday and lose itself gallantly in the freer, mystical, magical side.

I find the human mind intriguing. My work often has intricate observations of my own mind and other imagined places cut by hand into sheets of paper. These layered, often almost sculptural but fragile pieces are my window to that magical, mystical space.

On the other hand, my practice of paper sculptures allows me to explore the flexibility of paper. Utilising the traditional paper mache technique, these sculptures are made from discarded newspapers and finished with pages from pre-loved books, which imparts them a light environmental footprint and a surreal character. The sculptures are rich in form and texture, which makes them tactile in nature and appealing to the eye and the mind.

My artworks as well as sculptures are often intricately detailed with a touch of the whimsy. Hopefully, this necessitates and therefore allows the viewer of my art work to slow down and indulge in their curiosity.
