Early Spring Thaw

Concept

"My work is a fiction set in a moment of time. It is a contemporary fiction composed of fragments of thought, place, sight, myth, emotion, and dream. Unrecognizable past, specific present and undetermined future all co-mingle in my work to form a recognizable story and moment that is both as specific and ungraspable as time itself.

I have purposely painted my work in a simple way akin to the glimpse of what one may see at first glance. I have exaggerated color, subject and composition to express the lingering emotion of what one may feel. I have fragmented, abstracted and combined memories, dreams, past and present forms in an attempt to touch the internal impetus of what one may know. I am trying to evoke a feeling of mystery and moment as specific, timeless and elusive as the shape of a cloud, the feel of the wind, the smell of an approaching storm, and the change of the light in the sky.

My paintings are an attempt to combine all elements into a story that is current yet distant. A story that is within our grasp and yet not. It is the attempt to capture the elusiveness of time and give voice, memory, and form to the ephemeral.

My stories always start with large paintings painted in oil and acrylic. I use fragments and details of these paintings in various states of finish to be digitally combined and layered together for my mixed media artwork. Those images are printed on watercolor paper and finished by hand with acrylic paint. Again always the attempt of giving form to memory, time and the ephemeral. "
