    Description

Koinagashi" is one of a series of three small water-related landscapes that trace my own upbringing and bring together elements of two cultures, Japanese and Brazilian. I used a Brazilian jacaranda board for the support, and paints in the traditional Japanese pigment colors. The main motif in this painting is the river, and I depicted the carp floating event that takes place in May in Yamaguchi Prefecture, my grandfather's hometown.

  • About this artist

    Concept

I focus on two concepts in my work. In creating Shunga, I am influenced by the Japanese subculture and attempt to mix the traditions of Japanese painting and board painting with contemporary art. From the perspective of a woman who grew up between Japan and Brazil, I express various sexual proclivities and fantasies about my own sexual object, the male figure, and raise themes such as society, gender, and sexuality. In my landscapes, I paint guided by the grain of the wood, based on the Shinto worldview that the world naturally follows its own course, and that it is best to let nature take its course. In addition, the artist explores the relationship between the painting and the support and its possibilities by utilizing pauses in the painting.
