Description

This piece is made with liquid acrylic paint. I made this in May 2021, shortly after losing my job due to COVID. I found myself without a job for the first time in years, and I felt as though I needed to choose whether to find a new job right away, or to use this time as an opportunity to rest and develop my art practice. It felt like a very difficult decision, and I believe this is where the split portrait in this painting comes from.

Concept

Recently, I’ve been exploring media, colors and composition in an actively intuitive and therapeutic way. This break from extensive pre-planning with my work has helped me with processing the pandemic we find ourselves in, as well as with many pent-up frustrations or worries as I navigate my way through post-secondary life. I allow myself to work and re-work a piece as many times as I need to to get my intentions across, but I try to plan as little as possible when I begin a painting, allowing freedom to change concepts partway through a piece. Working this way is also allowing me to continuously develop my style, well beyond what I thought it was as I was exiting my art degree.

I find myself drawn to bright and bold colors and tend to gravitate towards abstraction with both realistic and surrealistic elements. I am interested in exploring and studying a variety of subject matter in order to incorporate it into my work, and I remain open minded to any direction my career takes.

Does this art work need a frame?

In many cases, art works with a canvas stretched over a wooden frame can be displayed as is. Thin art works other than canvases are easier to frame. For any questions or concerns please chat us.

What kind of hardware should I use for hanging the artwork?

If you are concerned about repayment costs, such as when renting a house, wall pins and hooks that do not leave noticeable hole marks are available at major DIY Store and art supply stores.

If you want to hang a canvas with a hook, a hook type with a long hooking surface, such as a V-shaped type is recommended.

If there is a string on the back of the canvas or the back of the frame, you can hang it with a pin type that has a short hooking surface.
