Description

In Elijah, there is inspiration from Elijah the Prophet entering Heaven as a column of fire. There is a contemporary reference here to Elijah Cummings( Jan. 18th 1951 - October 17th 2019,), who in his career as an civil rights activist and a political leader during his time in Congress exhibited this same fire. This was most evident during the 2019 hearings investigating the conditions that immigrant detainees were facing when apprehended at the Mexican border. The plight of children isolated in cages were enough to cause Cummings to bellow at the Chamber: We are better than this!. The volume of this exclamation was an audible reflection of my own anger towards those who continued to implore that there was nothing to see here. So we must carry this fire not to light the way, but to illuminate what is in plain sight.

Concept

My work is a kind of organized chaos, creating painterly works through careful planning to ultimately relinquish control to the paint itself. I apply paint to an acrylic sheet mounted on a wooden handle and then pull the tool across the surface. The results are random, sometimes beautiful. This technique was popularized by Gerhard Richter, who is a great influence on my work. My work is based on poetry and politics, hope and fear, and my visceral reaction to those ideas.

If you are concerned about repayment costs, such as when renting a house, wall pins and hooks that do not leave noticeable hole marks are available at major DIY Store and art supply stores.

If you want to hang a canvas with a hook, a hook type with a long hooking surface, such as a V-shaped type is recommended.

If there is a string on the back of the canvas or the back of the frame, you can hang it with a pin type that has a short hooking surface.
