    Description

The area where I live and work on the outskirts of London, is rich with sources of water: lakes, canals and rivers and borders a District called “Three Rivers”. Water is the source of life and is also a powerful female metaphor in literature. As part of a two artist show at the Watford Museum (Three Rivers District), I created a series of paintings which were inspired vintage photographs of women from over 100 years ago from the Museum’s photographic archive and created water-inspired paintings. This painting is named after the Greek goddess associated with spring and youth, the statues of which were popularly used as as water fountains in the 19thand early 20thcentury (also when the photographs were taken). Abstract ripple patterns are etched into the surface and it is framed in a bespoke grey/black sunken frame, specifically stained to match the colour in the painting.

    Concept

I construct visual narratives in paintings of human figures, which reference world mythology or fairytales. The resultant paintings have a mythical/magical feel with psychological and sometimes dark undertones. I use a variety of media (charcoal, graphite, acrylic, oil paint and gold leaf) depending on the sort of effect I am trying to create.
