    Description

Seattle based multi-disciplinary artist Seth Sexton creates meticulous pen and ink drawings. Central to his work are repetition, pattern, and meditation; expressed through the accretion of circular marks into concise states of order. The obsessive application of circle forms gives the viewer an acute sense of time and duration; some of his works taking months to complete. The circle transcends into a dream-like meditation where the mundane becomes profound. The resulting images suggest natural and biological forms emanating specificity and sacred geometry.
The images are iconic, abstract, and craft-like. They are at once, reminiscent of reliquary, Morrocan tribal rugs, and Aboriginal dream paintings. They are symbolic maps, plotting a course from the inner workings of the body to the stars in the heavens. All of this while exploring the circuitous path between, biology, psychology, and spirituality, where mental order and disorder are often at the crux.

In 2015 my 200 word Artist Statement said

“I am a performative body creating actions, images, and objects. Central to my work are pattern, meditation and repetition. The observable parts of the practice leave the viewer with an acute sense of time and duration. My choreographies explore the liminal and circuitous pathways of physiology, biology, and psychology, where mental order and disorder are often at the crux.”

Hoarding Disorder (OCHD) is a mental disorder situated in the “Anxiety Spectrum of Disorders” chapter of the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of mental disorders, 5th edition. it’s the excessive collection and retention of any materials to the point that it interferes with day-to-day functioning. It can create a hazard or a potential hazard for the individual and or others as it did for me and my sisters. Hoarding frequently develops into a vicious cycle where individuals literally become trapped in their own homes due to the sheer amounts of detritus and clutter that typically amasses. The excess often results in both decreased mobility within the home as well as decreased utility of the home itself.

There is mounting evidence that OCD is a heritable disorder since an individual is twice as likely to develop OCD if he/she has a first-degree relative who has it. This heritability is increased ten-fold if an individual has a first-degree relative who developed the dis-order in adolescence or childhood. Gene research suggests that a region on chromosome fourteen may be linked with compulsive hoarding in families with OCD.

Marina Abromovic said about the history and origination of Durational Performance “In the early 70’s, it was called body art: all performance artists those days had been using their body as the place where the art was being developed”. As a formally trained dancer, I think of the pedagogy of dance and the ideas of embodiment, encoding, repertoire and the body’s re
