"Seeing is forgetting the name of the thing one sees.”
The Paul Valéry quote is an elegant textual statement of the visual work I have been making throughout my career, which includes painting, photography, and multimedia works. Currently, I am painting oil on canvas and drawings as well as a series of photographs. The theme that runs through my work is seeing (rather than looking) and thinking beyond that which is immediately in front of the viewer.
I work with what I believe are universally recognizable objects: lemons, circles, vases, urns, and the human figure. The use of these items is a visual hook to engage the viewer with an object and then look deeper into the space that the objects occupy in the composition. The viewer must bring place, memory, and their own experience to “see” and provide meaning. I feel these are powerful forces: memory and place. I look at all my work as figurative, as the figure is of course the viewer - without whom the work would have less if no meaning at all.
I started with painting, moved to objects, installations, and photography, and have now re-started with painting to pare back to essential visual representation. I use a limited palette, and objects in an indeterminate space. Craft and execution are a formal aspect of the work, and I am planning larger works that more directly influence the physical space in which people experience art.
With the profusion of media and representational methods, my current work utilizes more traditional media: oil paint, charcoal, graphite, paper, and canvas. It is also a formal approach towards compositions that convey and evoke a conversation about time, place, memory, and our place with others and within the world.”
