Concept

I like to transform touching moments in my life into ceramic works. The reason I always create women and children is because it is easy to put my own emotion into them. And I also put other nature existences in my works together. It could be something we can see like trees, flowers, small animals, moon and stars, or something we can feel like the gentle breeze, sunshine, time and inspiration. I would like to express with clay that we are definitely a part of the nature in this world. I create three-dimensional works and murals as if I am painting with clay. I do not compromise on the deep and gentle facial expressions of the women and girls, and I’m particular about colors in my ceramics. I usually paint with underglaze, glaze, overglaze, and liquid gold and fire them several times. It is my hope that those who connect with my work will discover a little happiness.

Biography

Mariko Okubo was born in Japan.
She studied oil painting at the Department of Fine Arts, Akashi High School, Hyogo, Japan. After graduating, she went to study in the U.S.A., then she worked as a graphic designer producing English advertising materials for a leading electronics company.
In 2010, she moved to Taiwan, and it was there that she first learned ceramics.
She is a dedicated ceramicist, and fortunate to be selected for numerous competitions.
Presently, while running her own ceramic and art studio Green Time in Kyoto, Japan, she regularly exhibits her works at museums, department stores and galleries.
