Nathan Wagoner works primarily in oil over acrylic on various supports including paper, cardboard, wood, canvas and EPS (a modern rigid foam). His work is focused on the interior life of memory, associations and imagination and draws on sources such as Votive Paintings, Tarot and Loteria Cards, Childrens Encyclopedia's, Rebuses, Illustrations and others. A lifelong student of Art History, much of his work playfully refers to art from the past, including Picasso, Delacroix, Titian, Matisse, Duchamp, Picabia, Warhol, and many others.

He considers a painting to be a success when it becomes more than the sum of its parts, a mystery of its own.

His favorite quote about painting comes from Philip Guston: 'You see, I look at my paintings, speculate about them. They baffle me, too. That’s all I’m painting for'.
