Jo is an artist, letterpress printer and maker.
Her studies in art history, cinema, philosophy and literature continue to inform a diverse arts practice that revels in process and the accumulation of mark and glyph. Her work is made in order to understand the self and the world at large, to document and observe a life. Making (be it artworks or goods) is seen as an act of joy and inquiry that favours contemplation, poetics and energetic out-pourings;
“I see my makings, as a very human act. It is a personal, autobiographical collection of word, imagery, material and process, that aims to capture the fleeting moments of human feeling and emotion; from suffering and pain to enthusiasm, love and the riches of a simple life. I see all of these human states of being as equal, not as positive or negative, just “as is” and beautiful in their own poetic resonances. To experience an artwork and connect with the humanity, energy and story behind it, another human being, is a rich and humbling experience; an experience in which you somehow feel “seen” by the other and content in that exchange”.
“I am interested in the physicality of making artworks and I often find myself mending, fixing and repairing in the marks I make and the processes I employ. This may be an effort to right wrongs, to symbolically fix the unfixable or to make amends, but these are acts that sometimes feel like ritual and kinetic understandings, as though I can only understand, or at least have a greater understanding, of an idea, a situation, a person or a memory through the motion and the making”.
Jo lives and works from her family property in the Northern Rivers of NSW Australia.
She shows periodically and is found most days designing and printing in the letterpress studio she co-founded with husband Andrew Olive, Olive Letterpress.
