Maria Lavera was born in 1975 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is of French and Mapuche ancestry, a South American aboriginal people. That Mapuche great-grandfather who made a European woman fall in love with him emerges as an atavistic and enigmatic presence in the harsh and dark images of many of her paintings. The artist discovered her fascination with painting and art through an aunt who passed on to her the enchantment of lines and textures. Lavera explains that she likes to let things happen without a clear intention, intuitively. She is fascinated by the effects of color, its play of transparencies and shadows that allow her to explore her moods freely. For her, painting is a visual conversation, a moment, a feeling and it is, above all, the possibility to express the mystery of life through a symbolic space of complete expressive freedom.
