Concept

When I look at trees, I see a whole different world operating in a completely different dimension from human consciousness. Growth rings on trees look like the ripples that raindrops make on a puddle, and branches look like veins that run through our body. These resemblances remind me that we are a small part of the interwoven system that exists in a dimension distant from human consciousness. I am constantly drawn to beauty in the ambiguity of human existence. Humans are creative by nature, and know how to swim through this flowing world. They seek for truth to keep themselves from drifting away, but it cannot be found in the voices outside. The truth can only be found within oneself.
Art is a language that allows me to be true.

Biography

Madoka Naito is a multidisciplinary artist from Okinawa. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Mount Allison University in Canada, with majors in painting and photography and a minor in art history. Her works are inspired by nature. She is especially influenced by the trees called "gajumaru (banyan trees),” which grow in the southern area of Japan. She explores humans' natural state as a part of nature and often examines the contradiction of humans in society. Through her experience of living in different places such as Nepal, Alaska, and Canada, she came to know that truth cannot be found in the voices outside, but can only be found within oneself. Through art, she depicts beauty in the ambiguity of human existence, while exploring creativity of humans as nature.
