Concept

[-mix-] To make one thing by adding another thing to it. Also, to bring several kinds of things together. The work "marble" was created under the theme of "mixing. The work is characterized by the fact that multiple photographs are mixed together to create a new world. Each photo is distorted, split, inverted, or increased by image processing. Unlike so-called composite photographs or collages, this work is similar to the act of mixing paints. Each photograph is like a painting, and by mixing them on the canvas, they become a new photographic expression that is intricately intertwined. The most distinctive feature of this work is that the artist paints not with the colors of paint, but with the actual colors of the real world, in other words, he paints pictures with photographs. Since everything that can be photographed can be freely mixed and matched, the possibilities for color tone expression are endless. The resulting work is a complex marble-like mixture of multiple photographs, and at first glance it appears to be a painting. However, when one looks closer, one can see that there are still images of the original photographs everywhere, indicating that this is not a painting made with paint. This work is either a photographic work that looks like a painting or a painting made from photographs. Through this work, I hope to convey the charm of the colors and shapes of objects, and the beauty of the colors that can be expressed by mixing them.

Biography

Ryuji Tokuda

Born in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture in 1986, Ryuji Tokuda graduated from the Department of Photography at Tokyo Visual Arts and worked for three and a half years at amana, an advertising production company.
In addition to his work as a photographer, he also works as a photo artist, creating a variety of works every day with the motto of "making the most of the characteristics of digital photography to create interesting works.
Recently, he has been working on "mirror ball," "great growth," and "marble.
The "mirror ball," which he began creating in 2017, is a work that expresses the theme of multidimensional space in various locations by using a technique of floating a mirrored sphere in a world surrounded by photographs on six sides and having that world projected 360 degrees.
The work "great growth," which began production in 2019, is based on the theme of giant trees in various parts of Japan, and is intended to convey the overwhelming presence of giant trees that have grown over hundreds or thousands of years.
In "marble," which he began creating in 2021, he mixes multiple photographs and reconstructs new colors and shapes by mixing the colors and shapes of each photograph as if they were paints.
Each of these works has a completely different style and theme, but they all have one thing in common.
They express "a world that cannot be seen simply by looking at it" through photography.
In "mirror ball," the photographer expresses the concept of dimension; in "great growth," the length of time; and in "marble," the mixing of colors and shapes, concepts that we do not perceive with our ordinary senses, but are certainly there.
Photography that can express such things is very interesting, and I would be happy if I could convey this feeling through my works.
