SHINJIRO TANAKA(田中紳次郎 / SHINJIRO TANAKA)

For me, drawing is synonymous with dancing. I have been working as a dancer for 20 years since I was 16 years old. I have danced on the streets, in clubs, on the stage, in strange countries, everywhere. Dancing has brought me "freedom" and "salvation". Dancing is a world where the color of the inner soul, not the superficial self, is valued as it is through non-verbal expression. I felt this especially strongly when I lived as an Asian minority in New York. No matter how skilled you are, no one will appreciate you if you are dancing to the steps. The most important thing is whether your heart is dancing or not. In recent years, I have been attracted to the real pleasure of two-dimensional works that can trap "time" in a material, and I have been working mainly in this field. When I create works, I focus on how high I can put the purity of soul and emotion into them, just as music naturally moves the body. To achieve this, he chooses minimalist objects such as "dots and lines" and strips away as much superfluous information as possible. The question is how to convert the air, sound, and energy that exists at that moment and put it on the screen. His goal is to draw pictures that make the heart dance, rather than dance around with the tricks of the trade.

Biography

Shinjiro Tanaka uses primitive motifs such as dots and lines to express his own view of life and death, the connection between life and death, and the potential of human beings. Based on his own experience as a dancer, his works have a sense of dynamism in terms of structure and color, accompanied by musical rhythm.
Born in L.A. in 1985, she graduated from Keio University in 2008 and worked at Dentsu before moving to New York.
She has worked as a musical producer's assistant, performed with Nile Rodgers and CHIC as a dancer, launched the apparel brand "BSWK," and performed at the Heisei-Nakamura-za Theater in New York.
After returning to Japan, she worked as an art coordinator for art agency TokyoDex, and became an independent artist in 2019. She is currently involved in a variety of expressive activities through art, including canvas works, murals, digital works, and corporate collaborations.
