Concept

Visual language. My works on paper reflect fragments of thought and feeling, inspired by plant life, growth, soil. They are a realisation of a moment, a private glance on nature. Some appear my observations of movement and texture while others resemble excerpts of a longer story. Combining graphite or charcoal lines with acrylic paint and paper cut outs such as hemp or papyrus enable me to create a layered effect. Besides using a paint brush I apply the acrylic paint with a palette knife, using shapes cut from paper as a mold, harnessing the coincidents that arise.

After graduating at ArtEZ institute of the Arts, Marieke Thijssen (b. 1964) has been working independently as a designer and artist. She lives and works in Amsterdam.
