Self-taught and unconventional are best defining her artistic persona, as Maria-Alexandra has developed a non-representational, abstract style. Abundant in shapes that give the viewer the power of a personal interpretation - a Rorschach inkblot test.

“I am attracted by specific imagery and palette of emotions: the existential scream and look of terror - the human angst when facing the unknown. I put on canvas what can’t be expressed verbally and let the viewer take the composition and create its own meaning.

I use spontaneous movements and strokes on canvas to paint ample, sometimes dark, thick, or fine layers of acrylic and oil. I spread them nervously as the excitement arises. My hand is dictating the rhythm. The inspiration comes from the depths of my brain, from life experiences, from the ugliest characters that parade my dreams, and from existential tremors. I am thrilled each time I face the blank canvas: because from nothing I create something. No sketch or draft is needed, just a primus motus, a will of expression. Therefore the journey is exciting and the end results are surprising and cathartic. "
