Concept

Born and living in Berlin, Germany. From 1956 to 1962 he studied commercial art and exhibition design with Helmut Lortz at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin (West). Gert Neuhaus is a surrealist painter and draftsman, specializing in oil and acrylic painting, as well as charcoal and pencil drawings. Enthused and inspired by the greats of the 1960s such as Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse, Jean Miro and old Man Ray, whom he knew personally, he began his career as a naive painter and draftsman. Three main factors still influence his work today. 1. the devastation of World War II had a great impact on him as a child and adolescent, and is often reflected in a brokenness in his works. His paintings put the experience in a new surreal context and are always a subjective processing of this great German drama of the 20th century. 2 The prudery of post-war Germany was also a thorn in his side, which he denounced with provocative works. Therefore, early in the 60s, many gallery owners became aware of him and exhibited him in large exhibitions. His works sold like hot cakes. 3. If it offers itself, the artist leaves a chance to the beautiful coincidence. He recognized early that the Coincidence, if one is able to recognize it, also has a strong creative power that should be respected. Today Gert Neuhaus, like Markus Lüpertz, Gerhald Richter and Georg Baselitz, is one of the gray eminences of German art, who began their creative work with him in the 1960s. Today he works mainly as a painter and sculptor in Berlin.

Biography

Gert Neuhaus was born as the third child of Max Neuhaus, Commercial Director and later General Manager of AEG, and his wife Vera. Apart from an interruption during the war years in Radeberg near Dresden, he grew up in Berlin. From 1956 to 1962 he studied commercial art and exhibition design with Helmut Lortz at the Berlin University of the Arts (West). He then worked at the advertising agency H. P. Hoch, Esslingen. From 1962 to 1964 he was an exhibition designer at the Landesgewerbeamt Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart, and from 1964 to 1966 he was entrusted with exhibition designs for the Berlin Senate. 1961 trip to Paris and meeting with Man Ray. From 1966 to 1977 he was a gallery owner in Berlin, and since 1976 he has been creating murals on house facades, for example in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, other German cities and abroad. In 1981 he designed the exhibition of the TU Berlin for the Prussian Year. From 1982 to 1987 he was an artistic-scientific assistant at the TU Berlin. From 1986 to 2004 he held a teaching position as an artistic-scientific art educator and study councilor at the Foundation Lette-Verein Berlin at the department of photography, graphic arts and fashion, with a focus on nudes. From 1994 to 1996 he held various teaching positions at the UdK (Department 1 "Nudes in Space"), and since 2000 teaching positions with examination rights in the subject "Anatomical Drawing and Movement Studies" in the postgraduate master's program in stage design at the TU Berlin.
