Introduction
Although Toyism has been around since 1992, the social impact and importance is only now beginning to get recognized. This has everything to do with the prevailing zeitgeist and the realization that Toyism contains instruments that can give visual arts an anchoring point in broad social sections.

I PLAY, THEREFORE I AM
LUDO ERGO SUM

The foundation of the innovative, collaborative art movement Toyism in 1992 was originated as a counter-movement to post-modern individualism. Since then it has progressed steadily, as the longest running fine art movement.

In a basement of Emmen, Holland, Toyism founder Dejo wrote a revolutionary manifesto against the age of the ego. This pioneering concept remains confidential to all except the ‘Toyist’ artists, who each takes up a pseudonym after a letter of the alphabet not already used by another Toyist and signs all works with it accordingly. The anonymous collective consists of 20 members as of 2021, from America, China, Peru, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Romania, Iceland, Germany and the Netherlands.

The distinctive characteristic of Toyism is to infuse the fun of children into adult appealing art. Toyists are considered ‘fathers’ producing ‘offspring’ with the manifesto known as ‘Moeder’ (Dutch for ‘mother’). Thus, their figurative works bear a strong playful resemblance. Each Toyist portrays a different idea of ‘being human’ and by doing so contributes a new dimension to the movement.

In Toyism, a narrative that provokes personal reflection on the part of the viewer is essential. Toyism works are nothing if not bizarre but recognizable imageries drawn from reality, the surreal, and fantasy. The intense play of lines, shapes, dots and colors is intended to help open the viewer's mind to critical thinking about the human condition in the present day world.

The Language of Toyism
The language of toyism tells us how you can reflect and interpret feelings and emotions with lines and dots, and how you can use colours and forms to express the story. Post 2000 toyistic art shows a strong sense of more than just the global issues that affect our times, it also reflects the pleasure that we have in life. From ecology and environmental pollution to our love for the Earth and the animals… Of wars, and yet the hope for world peace… From the inner, individual struggle to the quest for self-improvement.

Art with a Message
Toyism is more than ever an art style with a message. Stories are revealed by means of symbols, bright colours and extremely precise details. The work of the toyists focuses strongly on the observer, with whom they wish to establish an interaction by the awareness of communal, social or psychological mechanisms. In the border area between fantasy and reality a play on stories and images is created, which encourages a further journey of discovery.

In 2021 the movement contains 20 artists. Their pseudonyms start with a chosen character of the alphabet. Re-use of the same character is not allowed, unless it becomes available because another artist has left the movement. This means that the maximum number of Toyists is 26. Using the 26 characters only once can also be seen as a nod to the number 13 (26 = 2 x 13) which has a special meaning within the movement. In 2021 the credo still applies; art stands for maximum freedom and within that freedom the artists voluntarily submit themselves to the guidelines as stated in the manifesto.
