Toochukwu Chukwubudom considers his art to be the meeting place of the tangible and the intangible. He produces art works that are both a representation of his world and feelings towards it, using live or mostly self-taken photo references and blending them with his imagination, emotions, beliefs, and philosophies. These allow him to explore and get a deeper understanding of who he is as a person, including his shortcomings, strengths, frustrations, inspirations, pains, complaints, and joys. When he truly understands and owns these, he realizes that they are what distinguishes him as a person and an artist.

He refuses to be defined by specific styles or mediums, believing that being an artist entails continually questioning the status quo, asking questions, changing and evolving, and setting a precedent for those who do not. As a result, he expresses himself using a range of materials, each unique in its own way, ranging from ball point pens to charcoal/graphite pencils to pencil/chalk pastels to oil and acrylic paintings. In the same vein, he is continuously experimenting with his art style because he feels that change is the only constant.

A series of three acrylic paintings that depict a few the little lovely things that make my country a beautiful place. Yes, we do not have our shit together, no one does. But by focusing on the good and not the bad, we draw strength to push through.

Toochukwu Chukwubudom (b.2000) is for the most part self taught artist who hails from Rivers state, Nigeria. He’d rather not be bound to or defined by certain styles or mediums of art but
wants to be free to explore them all. He’s a strong believer in the philosophy that no matter what labels are thrown his way, only he can define himself.

I have been creating art since I was a little kid, although I faced lots of ups and downs, extended breaks from my art at least two points in my life, in the year 2019, I picked my art up again and was determined to do so for good this time. Since then, I’ve taken part in a few art courses, both on and offline, read loads of books and art related articles, watched hours and hours of YouTube videos and tutorials with regards to the subjects of the art making process, the art making business and the psychology of art selling and in other cases, to expose and inspire myself to practices, cultures and ways of thinking in different parts of the world. If I can’t travel the world, the internet is sure a good place to start. All this to satiate my never ending hunger to learn new things and develop myself into a wholesome artist. If there is anything I love more than learning new things, it’s trying out new things and exploring new ideas.
