Historical and contemporary source materials are thus conjoined, yielding a sense of disequilibrium and of multiple, intertwined narratives of selfness. I am interested in how a portrait may act as a narrative of one person’s journey yet also reflect the circumstances, conditions, and impositions of the wider society.

Born in the United States, Mary Hayes lives and works in Montreal, Canada. She holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Concordia University. A painter in oil and watercolour, she has presented several solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Quebec, Canada, and abroad. She has received gran...
Born in the United States, Mary Hayes lives and works in Montreal, Canada. She holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Concordia University. A painter in oil and watercolour, she has presented several solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Quebec, Canada, and abroad. She has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Aldolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, and been hosted by artist-in-residence programs in the Dominican Republic and Spain. Mary’s work can be found in various public and private collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, Loto-Quebec, the Bibliotheque et Archives nationales du Quebec, the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec, and Senvest Inc.
