Aakash discovered a new visual vocabulary inspired by the Kota Paintings and has been working on subjects such as animal hunting (The Sikar series), Mythology, and Urban Poverty. The Sikar series is inspired by the Kota paintings from the middle seventeenth Century by the group B influenced by the artist Niju, an old master. The series is thought to explore and revisit the subject, such as animal hunting and help the viewer to comprehend the subject with new perspective. The artist also suggested that “ My intention to work on the Sikar series is to question the illegal Killings of Wild animals and to encourage the coexistence of all living beings. I’m sure to say, a work of art can act as a mirror, which can unmask the unreal and provide an opportunity to see a new perspective”. Another subject Mali has been working on is the Urban poverty. The subject interests him to capture the living conditions and lifestyle of the people residing on the streets. One of the artwork related to the subject is ‘on Charpai’ . It depicts an Old woman sitting on Charpai - a traditional Indian bed. The self-taught emerging painter aspires to become more responsive towards contemporary time and to develop critical thinking through his explorations.

Aakash Rajendra Mali was born in 1999 in Vadodara district, Gujarat to the family of farmers. After graduation from high school, he pursued an Interior Design course at the CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

The design schooling was a starting point to provide him an exposure to the Fine art discipline as the studios offered involved methodologies, tool and techniques with an understanding of aesthetic and visual representation, such as model making, material experimentation, visualization and imaginative drawings, 2D - 3D form explorations, and drafting. The viewer could look beyond the visible and see the value of efforts and process behind an artwork. This understanding, as Aakash thinks, is a fruit of design education. Also, Aakash has been participating in group exhibitions, open calls, competitions and virtual art residencies which raised his confidence to continue.
